"These areas of the home generate lots of heat
so I believe in open and free space that is regularly
ventilated," he says.
"To me, there is nothing worse than congested
and enclosed spaces for cooking or washing functions
-- especially in a tropical environment.
"An interior relationship with the gardens and
outdoors is the way to avoid that."
Although the integration of indoor and outdoor
spaces is important in a tropical kitchen or bathroom
design, it's also about the incorporation of rich, natural
colours, lush greenery and wooden materials.
"I believe materials that are cool to feel should
be used. For example, a polished concrete floor
or if this is too minimal, stone tiles or slated timber
"It's best to keep the materials used for the table
tops and cabinetry the same as the floors. This allows
for good ventilation and draws focus to the tropical
elements in the design."
The tropical kitchen and bathroom is simple in
design, but big on the elements. The focus should be on
incorporating a sense of flow between inside and outside,
while providing a sense of abundance.
The Research House by John Henry Architects
considers the exploitation of light and space, creative and
sustainable landscaping and the seamless connection of
interior and exterior spaces. It features internal gardens,
rock pools and waterfalls against a large white canvas.
