What are the most important aspects
of the kitchen?
Don't underestimate the island bench as the real star of
the kitchen. This is where it all happens; the cooking and
preparation zone, homework station, storage, and dining
and entertaining hub. And in terms of design, the island
bench defines the junction between kitchen and living.
We recommend duplicating the materials of the bench
to those in the living spaces to visually link the areas.
For example, we love American Walnut veneer, which
looks great on the face of the island bench and repeated
in the built-in joinery of adjoining living zones. A timber
also adds warmth to what could be a clinical space and
o ers a good contrast with steel and glass found in
kitchen areas. Maximise its potential. Big is best; keep
it clean and streamlined, pack in the storage and allow
for ample legroom.
What would you have on the floors?
Polished concrete ticks all the boxes for us. It's hardwearing,
seamless, low maintenance, environmentally responsible
and the aggregate options are endless. For some luxe, we'd
install under-floor heating.
What's on the walls?
We'd bring the outside in by incorporating a long line
horizontal window as a splashback -- and for a splurge,
a Shugg seamless slider window to double up as a servery.
What's on the benchtops?
You can't beat reconstituted stone on the bench top. It's
design savvy with the colour options on o er and gives a
streamlined e ect. It is also so practical with its non-
porous nature and resilience. We'd pencil round the edges
slightly to minimise any chipping.
For the lighting?
A clever combination of ambient and task lighting is
a must. We recommend strip lighting for ambience and
directed down lights for work areas. And just for fun,
enliven the space with some bold oversized drum
shades to sit above the island bench.
For the fittings and finishes?
Less is more. Go handle-free, integrate your appliances
for the cabinetry to look like furniture, select slick
appliances and flush mount your cook top and under
mount your sink. Kleenmaid have great appliances
with practicality and style. We love the 750mm-wide
pyroletic wall oven.
An extra-special touch
Make it the coolest room in the house! If the budget
and space permit, be the envy of all your friends and
go for a cool room. On a practical level, the cool room
not only takes the place of the fridge, but the pantry
and wine storage as well.
Definitely the ingredients for homemade lemon lime
and bitters from our foodie friend Gretchen. Mix equal
amounts of freshly squeezed lemon juice, lime cordial.
Add soda water and a dash of bitters. Cheers for a
non-alcoholic drink on a hot summer's day.
