Personal sanctuary' is the design direction of this
bathroom by one of the world's leading designers.
Milan-based Spaniard Patricia Urquiola designed
this space for bathroom brand Axor. She's channelled
a rainforest, where soft ferns, exotic orchids and sturdy
yuccas dwell with new and nostalgic furnishings and
fixtures to create a space that not only says sanctuary, but
also personalises the zone. In line with the current trend
for integration between the bedroom and bathroom,
she's merged the two areas as the one "intimate" space
and installed a modular partition (Axor's free-standing
heater, mirror and towel rack in one) to provide some
privacy. She signals the return of plants into the bathroom,
and this design epitomises the current trend for more
'living room' pieces to make their way into the wet
room: antique clocks hang on the walls, a new chair sits
alongside occasional tables, and there are lamps, rugs
and plants that create a distinctly 'sanctuary retreat' take
on what's traditionally been a cold, functional, masculine
room. Plus, while bathroom design has been bringing us
closer together -- double showers, side-by-side double
basins -- this design acknowledges people need their
own space and have di erent needs, so there's a
make-up area, two showers separated by plants and
two basins at opposite sides. Baths positioned side by
side bring us together again, but acknowledge that
di erent people like di erent water temperatures...
and bath salts. Axor www.axor-design.com.
Living greenery mixes with eclectic occasional furniture
and separate 'his & her' areas to create a relaxation zone.
"I need to see the bathroom in relation to
my bedroom. So, the wall between the
bedroom and the bathroom has to change."
How to bring in the look:
• Traditional 'living room' furniture -- occasional
tables, designer chairs, luxe lighting -- encourage
you to use the space for relaxation.
• Plants are a big trend in bathrooms and are easy
additions to create a sanctuary feel.
• Two showers and basins positioned opposite each
other provide the luxury of personal space.
• Well-chosen soft furnishings, woodgrain and a
white palette provide an organic look.
