Home' K and B : Kitchens and Bathrooms 2010 Contents No handles, floating elements, tinted
glass... contemporary kitchens are all
about 'hide and chic-ing'. Think tucked
away technology and work zones that
melt into an open-plan space to blur where the
cooking starts and the lounging stops. The island
bench is integral to the design as a multi-functional
space where you can meet, eat, relax and chat without
feeling like you are in the 'kitchen'. And positioning is
key, with it becoming more of a link between dining,
lounging and outdoor zones. This Linear kitchen from
Pedini's Dune collection is typical of the trend. Its palette
of white and tinted glass mirror the surrounding walls
and floor to anchor it into the overall scheme of the
home, and stainless steel benchtops cap matt-white
cabinetry to create a light footprint. Glass is a key
element in this design, too, not only shielding shelving,
but also adding a lighting element, with built-in LEDs.
"And, at eye height, it gives the feeling of a room being
lighter because of the reflection," says Pedini design
director Benedict McKenna. On the savvy side, a
'pendant' above the island bench opens up at the
sides to become a rangehood; an absence of handles
ensures a seamless finish; and storage is customised
-- "so, rather than dumping everything in the one spot,
there is a precise place for everything," adds Benedict.
Perhaps one of the most cutting-edge elements,
however, is that the main work zone is on the island
bench, meaning the space around it is 'less kitchen
and more lifestyle area', which sums up the secret to
the contemporary kitchen. Pedini (08) 9385 5008,
How to bring in the look:
• The absence of handles ensures a seamless,
• A palette that mirrors that of the overall
home anchors the kitchen into the space.
• Savvy elements, such as touch-sensitive
units and sliding doors on remote control,
ensure the kitchen can be 'packed away'
when not in use.
• Customised storage is key, so there's no
clutter outside or inside cabinetry.
