Hard surfaces are softened by nature's palette
in this award-winning London kitchen.

Alush landscape of greenery becomes part of the overall scheme
of this very modern award-winning home set on Highgate Cemetery,
London, by UK-based architects Eldridge Smerin. The hero feature
of the space is the 4x8m retractable roof. "The sliding glass roof was an integral
part of the design from concept. As the house is on a constrained site and
does not have a garden, it was important to provide outside space in the form
of the open 'courtyard'," explains architect Nick Eldridge. The roof runs silently
on low-friction tracks and incorporates low-e and solar control coatings to
minimise heat losses and thermal gains, closing automatically on the first drop
of rain. The interior features board-marked concrete panels, cast on timber, that
provide a texture and warmth not usually associated with this material. Coupled
with the opposing full-height glazed walls, which o er an uninterrupted view of
the lush cemetery grounds, the space oozes 'nature retreat', with a sophisticated
edge. The clean-lined kitchen features stainless steel work surfaces and
integrated sinks, while white lacquered cabinets and an island bench of black
oak punctuate the steel/concrete tone-on-tone. Su cient storage, a design
concept must-have, brings order and tranquillity to house Gaggenau appliances
and other accoutrement. A sophisticated AV and lighting installation has been
tailored and integrated invisibly, so the entire experience is calm and seamless.

" e uniqueness of this kitchen is how
the space can be opened to the sky and
transformed into an outside courtyard."
How to bring in the look:
• Floor-to-ceiling frameless glass and a
retractable roof open the kitchen to the
outdoors and welcome in greenery.
• Seamless finishes hide functional components
to maintain a tranquil experience.
• Natural textures and a tonal palette ground
the space in an earthy, but sophisticated, feel.
