Soft squares, tactile taps, bewitching black and beautiful baths: here's
what's 'cool' in the world of beautiful bathrooms TEXT Belinda Jackson
bathroom of the future Yes, it's about
sanctuary, but the bathroom has today
morphed into so much more. If you were to
sketch out the shape of the new Australian
bathroom, it would look something like this:
a bedroom spilling into the bathroom that
showcases a freestanding bath, with either a
hero freestanding basin or double basins, plenty
of invisible storage and the toilet hidden in its
own room. Want bookshelves and coffee tables
in your bathroom? Have them. Key to the new
bathroom is its mood: "Minimalism is out and
warmer, earthier designs are in," says Royston
Wilson, designer for Caroma Dorf. at explains
the rise of timber, which is appearing in bath-
room furniture, as well as the resurgence of
beautiful, natural marble. Cabinetry is big, with
cisterns hidden behind wall panels, keeping
the room's line smooth and clear, and multi-
purpose areas -- where you see a space shared
between bathing and sleeping -- are growing
more popular as urban homes grow smaller.

take a look at the Herbeau range, available
through the Edwardian Tile Company. You'd
have to really want them, though -- these
luxurious baths are handmade in France, take
six months to deliver and can cost around
$70,000. Worth it, we say! (08) 9431 7311,

agree: we're loving light. Reece says bathrooms
are increasingly being designed with large, open
windows for a beautiful view to a garden, over
a pool or a city skyline (as seen here). Skylights
are a great alternative, too, so you can score
light without compromising privacy.

luxe is lush Mood lighting and rich drapes?
Why not! Bathrooms are now stylised spaces
with beautiful furniture, chairs and occasional
tables, and traditional fixtures are having to
keep pace. e most recent premier Italian
bathrooms gathering, Cersaie Fair, saw the
rise of the so-called 'hero basin', which is a
freestanding, sculptural basin positioned in the
centre of the room. Pure drama.
