to the wet room
Timber is making a stylish appearance
in bathrooms. However, not all wood is
up to the job. "You need timbers that are
moisture-resistant or repellent," says
Steve Johnson of kitchen and bathroom
specialists Retreat Design. "Natural woods,
such as fir woods and general ha rdwoods,
are more suitable for wet areas," he says.
Retreat's Denny McCrisken adds: " e
product we have is marine-grade ply; it
can also be used in the shower space."
To add extra oomph to a timber's moisture-
resistance, plu s prevent scum build-up,
choose a sealant such as Nanokote.
top 20 ADVICE
Who wants a fab new bathroom or kitchen
only to have a dud extraction fan put in?
No thanks. Rogerseller's Happy Air product,
which doubles as a room ventilator and
odour-reducing fan, blends easily into
a ny bathroom space. " e Happy Air fa n/
exhaust has a very plain, white face and
therefore doesn't stand out in a designer
bathroom," says Rebeca Pa rk of Rogerseller.
When it comes to making a statement, look
to Elica's range of ra ngehoods (available
through K&B Exclusive). ese are the
chameleons of the kitchen world, and
ca n look like a slick pendant or modern
a rtwork. Increasingly, rangehoods are being
incorporated into the design of the kitchen,
even tea ming up with cabinetry to provide
a practical over-the-cooktop storage option.

Tastic lights," says Meaghan
White of White Architects. " ey
are strea mlined and have the

are recessed into the ceiling."
Underfloor heating is another
option and there are cost-
effective solutions, such as
choosing to heat just sections of
your room (think along the work
zones of the kitchen or u nder the
bath mat in the bathroom), rather
than the entire floor. Lastly,
anyone who's had a heated towel
rack will say they're essential.
