19. integrating bed and bath
Integrating a bathroom into a bedroom
is complicated, with moisture a critical
consideration. "You need to work out how
to repel the moisture," says Steve Johnson
of Retreat Design. "You need a quality
extractor that's connected to the outside
and, paint-wise, a flat colour will take in
moisture, while a semi-gloss or gloss will
repel it, but you don't want water running
down the walls either," he says. A common
request is an open-plan bathroom that
takes its design cue from the furniture and
finishes in the bedroom, and has flooring
that remains the same colour but swaps
from soft to hard flooring in the bathroom.
Also consider where you wa nt to place the
loo -- some things are best left hidden!
Statement lighting, decadent wall motifs,
designer chairs... e wet rooms of today can be
as lu xe as you like. Just make sure you choose
carefully and seek advice from the experts, so
moisture doesn't damage you r decadence. We
love Bisazza's wallpaper mosaic tiles from Italy
(available at Myaree Ceramics), which create
giant swirls of roses, Michelangelo-esque figures
and other striking patterns, for bathrooms;
mirrored splashbacks a re a 'now' choice for the
kitchen. And accessorise as you would your
living area, including penda nts and floor-
sta nding lamps and eye-catching seating. Plus,
for the ultimate in decadence, look to marble,
stone and underfloor heating. For more, see our
roundup of top kitchens and bathrooms from
throughout the world (p29-55).
ADVICE top 20
UPSHOT: introduce more design-
driven and lifestyle pieces and fixtures
for a hit of luxe in your wet rooms.
wallpapers for wet rooms
Hot statement! Falper's George basin
will arrive in Rogerseller's Sydney digs in
June and will be available nationwide.
We love Florence Broadhurst's Summer Garden paper from
Signature Prints in this Greg Natale-designed bathroom.
Wallpaper in wet rooms? Absolutely!
Signature Prints' David Lennie says all
Florence Broadhurst papers (pictu red
here) are waterproof. If used in a high
steam area, however, they do need
sealant on the seams. In fact, a London
nightclub has a Broadhurst pattern on
its exterior wall that was sealed and has
lasted for three years (a nd still counting).
Watch for its new Optiluxe release.
