TIME TO REFLECT
Australians are afforded the lu xu ry of brillian t su nlight
a nd are wise en o ugh to highlight it in their ho mes.
We embrace clerestor y windo ws, glazed do ors, and
hybrid spaces that welco me the outdoo rs in . In the renovatio n
of this heritage home, enviably perched on Sydney Harbour,
Stephen Collier Architects k new that light and views were
to be maxi mised. Throu ghout the space, large skylights frame
Sydn ey Harbo u r B ridge an d, in this bathro om, carefully chose n
su rfaces refl ect light fro m both the bay and sky. Full-height
mirro red cupboards sit opposite a pixe lated splash of gold,
silver an d colo ured glass tiles. A polished copper tub glows atop
a high-shine co ncrete fl oo r, the reflective su rfaces aiding the move men t
of light throu gh the space. This home is in the running for a 2013 Austra lia n

In the ultimate worship of view an d su n light,
this H obart home opens itself to the sky. Maria
Gigney Architects offered a little ro mance to
the upper-l evel bathroo m of the hou se, which is
perched on a steep block o n B attery Point. A tiny
deck adjoins the bathroo m, a nd on it lies a Victo ria
+ Alber t freestanding bathtub, orien ted toward the
river. Sheltered on one side by a wall of dark stone
pavers, the deck then celebrates its harbo urside
location with an open roof. A slatted screen of
celer y top pine offers privacy fro m the neighbou ring
pro per ties an d pro motes i ndulgence in this unique
bathroom. This h ome is in the run ning for a 2013

In design, there is a cer tain decaden ce that co mes fro m u n expected compon ents
joining forces. Some homes do not call for minimalism, and then relish in the freedom.
It is a looseni ng of the ru les, a playfuln ess, an d it often forms the most interesting
spaces. A specific, histo ric reference point – Charles Garn ier’s famed Opera de Pa ris
– tra nsfo rmed this Melbou rn e wareho use i nto a two- bedro om apartment to theatrical
effect. I n the ho me’s kitchen , a co llisio n of materials fi nds harmon y throu gh a stru ctu red
co ncept, skilled detailing an d a highly creative appro ach. A custo m chan delier by
The Fla mi ng Beacon uses glass extrusion s from old light fittings, an d the featu re tiles
in the splashback are salvaged sample tiles from Artedomu s. A geo metric pattern w ithin
the wire-an d-acr ylic lightbox makes referen ce to Geoffrey Rica rdo’s watchful sculpture.
