Traditio nally co nsidered a necessity
fo r providing cooking heat and warmth
to the home, the concept of a live fire
in the kitchen is being reintroduced into
homes, with a new con temporary face.
The en try to this kitchen is a warm an d
welcoming site of minimalist lines an d the
radian ce of a glowing fireplace. S ubtly
fitted to the rear of the islan d ben ch,
a 1500mm ethan ol fi rebox faces the
dini ng table an d provides valu able wa rmth
within the high-ceilinged space. A black
glass splashback su rrou n ds the fi replace,
while the kickboard is set back 300mm,
giving the islan d a fl oating appearan ce.

We build our cities hugging the coastline and our homes as close to the waves as nature allows.
When designing a ho me that en du res i n that coastal lan dscape, con sideratio ns must be made to
material. The materials u sed in this Clovelly home – san dston e, co ncrete, timber – are raw an d
ro bust, and were intention ally chosen to cope with the seaside climate. A con crete flo or, wa lls
an d ceiling are softened by the o rganic swell of a cur ved wall clad in Western red cedar battens,
referen cing the lan dscape beyon d. Waln u t ve neer covers all join ery, an d adds tex tural interest
to this contemporary coastal home.
This home is in the running for a 2013 Austra lian Institute of Architects Awa rd.
